Biography

From a very young age I exhibited a natural affinity and passion for various aspects of technical application; I was always eager to understand for myself how things worked and would collect old radios, televisions and other electronic apparatus take them apart and figure out how they worked. As a child I learned to work with steel and repaired electrical tools and machines in the steel structure company owned by my father. After high school I started to work full time in my father’s company but continued my formal education in the evenings. In order to obtain more experience in various fields, I was seconded for a period of three years to a number of different companies where, amongst other things, I was involved in dismantling a small trial nuclear reactor and built special equipment for testing specific safety aspects of a nuclear power plant. Following this period of internship, I took over my father's company and in the subsequent years the company showed continued stable growth to the extent that I had to design and build a completely new factory to accommodate the needed additional manufacturing capacity and growing workforce. My tasks and responsibilities within the company were always very diverse, ranged from welding to general management. In addition to these activities I have been closely associated with various educational institutions for which, I have arranged trainee positions in mine and other companies and graded examinations and projects. As a result I was awarded a practical teaching diploma and my company was accredited as an official vocational training site. I also participated in a National Committee of Kenteq (Kenteq is a Dutch knowledge centre of the Ministry of Education and Science) developing a new curriculum for vocational education for the steel structure manufacturing industry. Besides running the steel construction company, I invested in an event centre and cafe in my hometown, the village of Rheden. The historical building (constructed circa 1909) always had a central function in Rheden and to this day is still considered the village community center. Though the building was designated as an official Heritage building and the previous owners were unable to consistently meet the obligations for conservation of a Heritage building. I appreciated the importance of having and maintaining such a historic building in Rheden and also saw an opportunity to make it economical viable and thus self-sustaining. As such, I developed the plans to extend and transform the building in a modern event center and café without altering the original architecture. In December 2005 we sold the steel structure company and I decided to migrate to Dominica in 2006. My entrepreneurial spirit saw in Dominica other possibilities. The presence of Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) with approximately 1400 mostly American students and a shortage of quality housing made me invest in property with a number of dilapidated cottages which I redesigned and turned into studio apartments for students. In 2017 Hurricane Maria put a halt to the flourishing business, destroying my property and then RUSM made the decision to relocate it medical science campus to Barbados. RUSM asked my wife, who has been with the school for almost 15 years, to also relocate to Barbados. Though I am still working on rebuilding my property, I see few viable options for growth and sustainability in the property rental business at this time in Dominica and I am ready to make another change in my career and embrace my next life adventure.
